Doom Pond sat opposite where The Broker pub is on the Leigh Road, next to Riley's Bowling and underneath the new development of 'Southside' apartments. The pond was used, possibly only one time, in a swimming test for an accused witch. There is no records of this, but has been handed down by word of mouth by Leigh families. Although 3 women were tried as witches in Leigh; Joan Allen in 1574 Alice Soles in 1622 Joan Rowle in 1645 I can only assume that the witch made to 'swim' was Joan Rowle, this being because the 'swimming test' was favored by Matthew Hopkins (witchfinder general 1644-46). She pleaded not guilty and was found not guilty, probably after drowning during a 'swimming'; her lack of buoyancy proving her innocence Southside is the first successful development on the site since Heley Superstore was forced to shut in the early 1980's due to the natural spring seeping through the foundations of the building. I wonder if the owners of the downstairs apartments have seen any paranormal activity?

Such a coincidence! I was reading the Evening Echo last night (fri 6 aug 2005) and they mention this..but they also list Sarah Moore ( who the nearby pub was named after) and they think she was the last witch to have been dunked in Doom Pond, I still have the article and if any member is interested i'll scan and send by request :0)

I know all about Sarah Moore - I will be contacting the Echo tomorrow about it. All the info they ran on Sarah was totally incorrect, so I want to set the record straight

good on you! It's nice that they are trying to run paranormal articles..but it'd be even better if they got the facts right at the same time!

Oh well, they never got back to me *shrugs* but they are not getting their hands on all my research for nothing LOL I noticed an article about the Hadleigh Castle crop circle in the Echo the other night too - someone claiming that 'paranormal forces made the pranksters do it'.......hmmmmmmm
