Doom Pond sat opposite where The Broker pub is on the Leigh Road, next to Riley's Bowling and underneath the new development of 'Southside' apartments.
The pond was used, possibly only one time, in a swimming test for an accused witch.
There is no records of this, but has been handed down by word of mouth by Leigh families.
Although 3 women were tried as witches in Leigh;
Joan Allen in 1574
Alice Soles in 1622
Joan Rowle in 1645
I can only assume that the witch made to 'swim' was Joan Rowle, this being because the 'swimming test' was favored by Matthew Hopkins (witchfinder general 1644-46).
She pleaded not guilty and was found not guilty, probably after drowning during a 'swimming'; her lack of buoyancy proving her innocence
Southside is the first successful development on the site since Heley Superstore was forced to shut in the early 1980's due to the natural spring seeping through the foundations of the building.
I wonder if the owners of the downstairs apartments have seen any paranormal activity?
