Looks like you should go alone, if you need other directions then let know.

If your coming from the M25 Waltham Abbey junction the route is easier. Off at Waltham Abbey, take the first exit towards Loughton/Epping etc.
Drive part the Jewish Cemetary on your right, then turn right at the pub down Claypit Hill, then fork right onto Pynest Green Lane.
You drive about 1 mile down there over some eleven speed bump till you land up at Hangmans Hill on that road.
From the M25 it is about two miles and should only take about 5 mins in a car.
You should recognize where you are from the photos I posted.

If you get out of the car & walk “up” the hill, you can fell yourself walking down the hill – it’s an optical allusion sadly.

The area of high beech is very interesting though - a very very spooky place, stories & legends abound about this place & have done so for years.

Anyone wanting to visit the area should check out the old church, it’s straight out of a hammer horror flick.

I really MUST pay a visit to Hangmans Hill. It sounds very interesting !

The church sounds a good place to have a look around.
We at EP have spent many a happy (?) hour in the middle of the night in some very interesting Church yards !

Some years back a friend told me a v spooky story about High Beech which he said happened to his sister & brother in law. I’m sure it’s rubbish though & he heard off someone else i.e. urban legend

“Sister & Brother in Law were driving through High Beech on a reasonably sunny summer’s afternoon, when they hit something on the road.

They both felt the jolt of the car & both heard the thump of the car striking something solid.

The brother in law gets but cant see anything. He searches everywhere for whatever it was that they had hit but can’t find anything / body. He gets back in & drives off when a bout mile down the road he spots a police car parked up. He stops, gets out & tells the policeman what had happened. The police man sighed & said that the ninth report they have had on that stretch of road in the past three months & that they are investigating.”

As I said I reckon it’s an urban legend.

This is the 1st time I have actually found anything online mentioning this! and I was already going to add something about it when I got to the thread about the church! because this happened to my sister and her ex-boyfriend approx 9/10 yrs ago on the road passing the church in High Beech/Epping Forest (holy innocents) It was late evening and after dark, using the road as a cut-through when the car ahead of them suddenly breaked then sped off so as they got closer they slowed thinking it was a hit and run, but as they got to the same point they also hit something!, then they saw a cloaked figure darting back and forth on either side of the road and dissappeared into the church graveyard through the fence!. They drove to the nearest pub and went in for a drink to get over the shock and the woman behind the bar said they were not the 1st to stop there straight after for a stiff drink!!! I remember this so vividly because they returned so quickly from their night out white as sheets and when I asked why they were back so soon she told me what they had experienced but her ex couldn't/wouldn't discuss it. Completely freaked me out and I wasn't even there!!! So to answer both questions yes it would be a good place to investigate and based on the state of the two of them when they came in that night this was no urban myth!!!

That’s very interesting topcat. I was told the story about 20 years ago.

My friend told me that his sister was very upset about it & refused to go anywhere near high beech for a long time afterwards.

There is something very strange about the area in general & is definitely worth an investigation.

Get onto the Epping road in the forest heading towards Epping, then turn left at the Robin Hood roundabout leading into High Beech.
Drive past the first car park with the cafe, carry on through the forest crossing over a junction, keeping straight ahead and going downhill.
You pass the High Beech village hall on your right and then come to the junction in the pictures which is Hangmans Hill.
From the main Epping road it should only take about five minutes drive.

I had a go at rolling uphill in both forward and backward directions, I have to say it was very weird and it did work. I think it was faster going backwards than going forwards but did work both ways!

You can see from the pics that the road does actually go uphill, it's very clear really.

It's a strange place and feels a little odd, there's something quiet strange about the location, just the shape of the triangle island which makes up Hangmans Hill is a little disturbing.
