Hi all
Does anyone know the exact location of hangmans hill, I think that it is in Epping somewhere.
Thanks in advance.

I think Hangman's Hill is seriously overrated and hyped up. I have read stories about it being a road that you go up towards a big tree where a hangman used to hang people from, and the picture it paints in your mind is that of a deserted road that is very steep and obviously a big tree at the end of the road. Unfortunately none of this is true, as the road is pretty flat, there is no tree and it’s in a very easy place to find and not at all deserted or spooky. The actual "illusion" only lasts for 10 yards aprox, and although the car does seem to be going up hill very slowly with the engine off, in reality the road is slightly down hill and it is due to the surrounding trees and the fact that in front of you the road does slope upwards slightly (but you are on the down slope and once you it the upslope the car comes to a rest. The location is High Beach, enter the forest through the Old Orleans roundabout, and keep going past the church and you eventually come to 3 roads in a triangle shape, hangman’s hill is one of these roads, it is the shortest of them, and joins 2 other roads together (the road really has no purpose) you’ll see what I mean when you get there. Simply turn onto the road, drive forward a few feet and either turn the car off or put in neutral and the hangman will do the rest! I am willing to take any single & attractive women to show them round Hangman’s Hill at if any ones interested in driving round a forest at midnight with me? ( only joking about the last bit , )

Its funny you shoudl say that about this road. Here on teh outskirts of Bristol, there is a similar raod which has all of the old legends associated with it.
The road itself is very long and only one part of it has the ability to pull a car up the hill. WHilst at college I went there about 4 times to do the experiment.
The first thing that I said was it was an optical illusion, so teh driver of the car parked at the bottom of a definite upwards slope and sure enough the car went up the slope, it is actually quite a steep incline. We actuallt had teh car going up to 28 MPH going up the hill on one attempt.
We also tried other things like getting 3 18-20 year old blokes to stand in front of the car and try to stop it moving up teh hill, we slowed it down but could not stop it.
After ruling out a optical illusion and a downward slope we started looking for a water course near teh side of the road which may run under the road and produce a magnetic filed or something similar to actually move the car. We could not find anything like this and we did do an exhaustive search.
In conclusion the hill is definitely uphill, we could not find a reasonable explanation as to why this was happening.
Recently I have been trying to find the place again, and I am pretty sure I have found the exact bit of road, but it doesn't appear to work anymore. I have noticed another area where it could be however, from memory it does not fit in with the surroundings as I remember them (there is only about 200 metres difference).

It is thought that High Beach was actually a gallows at one time. Someone did once point out a landmark which emphasised this - but I've since forgot what it was ;D

Look on the road map through the forest and to the far west there is a junction along Avey Lane with Pynest Green Lane; Hangmans Hill is the little slip road on the east side of Avey Lane that is not on any maps.
It's a VERY slight hill, but a definite gradient nonetheless. I have rolled objects down the hill, but your car always goes up. I blame strong magnetic fields personally.

Well I think I finally found Hangman's Hill today! I wasn't too sure at first and since there weren't any other cars about I didn't want to stay too long but did give it a go. Only thing is, after seeing all the video on Youtube now I think I was facing the wrong way if you know what I mean. Does the affect work in both directions or not?
I intend to go there sometime tomorrow if I can.
Has any been there recently?

Went back to Hangmans Hill yesterday and took some snaps for you. It's easy to get to if you know where you are and with a little direction. Get onto the Epping road in the forest heading towards Epping, then turn left at the Robin Hood roundabout leading into High Beech. Drive past the first car park with the cafe, carry on through the forest crossing over a junction, keeping straight ahead and going downhill. You pass the High Beech village hall on your right and then come to the junction in the pictures which is Hangmans Hill. From the main Epping road it should only take about five minutes drive. I had a go at rolling uphill in both forward and backward directions, I have to say it was very weird and it did work. I think it was faster going backwards than going forwards but did work both ways! You can see from the pics that the road does actually go uphill, it's very clear really. It's a strange place and feels a little odd, there's something quiet strange about the location, just the shape of the triangle island which makes up Hangmans Hill is a little disturbing.

Cheers for these Hermes
I have lived in Essex all my life and can't recall ever going to Epping Forest, something I'll have to put right this year!

I know Maldon, I like that fish & chip shop called Wheelers at the top of the high street. I went back to the hill today for another trip!
Perhaps I could meet you at Hangmans Hill Lewis, I would be free Tuesday sometime?
