Hey everyone!
Clearing out some old papers in my house I’ve come across an old copy of our local paper, The Romford Recorder, from just before Halloween. I thought one of the articles might be of interest as to locations so here is a retype of it and a scan (not too good as was a double page spread and I only have a A4 scanner and basic graphics pasting skills evidentially!).
I found it really interesting as I’ve always had a feeling about the Golden Lion Pub but had never been able to find any info about it till now…..
Enjoy!

From the ghostly butcher of Rainham to the White Lady of Dagnam Wood there are plenty of other worldly residents to be found in Havering.
In every corner of the borough there are said to be churches, woods and pubs with their own ghosts.
So if you are hoping to catch a glimpse of a spook at Halloween this Sunday there are plenty of places they can be found.
Local historian Brian Evans said: “I would say Havering is a very haunted place. It has many old buildings and a rich history. I have heard many, many stories of ghost sightings around the borough.”
One of the spookiest places in Havering is Dagnam Park, in Harold Hill, where a young girl was once found hanged from a tree.
Known as the White Lady of Harold Hill, her ghost is said to roam the woods with the leaves billowing in front of her.
Also said to haunt Dagnam Park is the ghost of a nobleman who was executed for treason in 1716. The body of James, Earl of Derwentwater, was allowed to rest at Dagnam manor house before his burial in
Lancashire, and his headless ghost is said to have haunted the old Manor House.
Rainham is another area that is popular with spooks. There have been reports of ghostly activity at Rainham library, at one time the site of an abattoir.
A butcher working there hanged himself in one of the outhouses and his ghostly presence has been felt among the bookshelves.
Across the road, however, there is a very genial ghost which is said to linger around Rainham Hall. This is reportedly Colonel Mulliner who lived there at the turn of the century. He has been seen several times peering out of the windows dressed in grey tweeds and a masher collar in the style of 1910.
Hornchurch has its fair share of ghosts, such as the monk who is said to haunt St Andrew’s Church in the High Street, and the servant girl who is seen in the attic of Fairkytes Arts Centre in Billet Lane.
Manager, John Shadwell, said: “The story is that when it was privately owned one of the servants had an affair with the young master. This was frowned upon, so he was sent away to war where he was sadly shot and killed. After discovering this the maid hanged herself.”
John has not seen the ghostly maid, but there have been sightings of her in the attic and a spiritual healer who works at the centre is adamant that he feels a ghostly presence in the building.
Upminster Golf Club in Hall Lane also houses a ghost with a tragic tale. The club used to be a manor house and in the early 17th century the young owner fell in love with a girl who rejected him.
Crazed with jealousy he kidnapped her and bricked her up in a tiny room.
Her ghost is said to have been seen by various members of the club, moving along the first floor hallway and in the secretary’s flat.
A member of staff at the club said:
“There was supposed to have been a sighting of a ghost a few years ago by the cleaners. Apparently they gave their notice in straight afterwards.”
A former rehearsal studio and bar in Chesham Close, Romford, was home to a modern day ghost which frightened many of the bands who rehearsed there.
Dave Wright, the owner of Musictek Studios, which has recently moved to Dagenham, explained that the ghost is that of an electrician who was electrocuted around 30 years ago.
He said: “So many people have seen him wandering around in a long black coat in the early hours of the morning. One band were rehearsing in the middle of summer when it was really hot, and suddenly the temperature dropped in the rehearsal room at midnight. They were terrified!”
The Golden Lion pub in Romford Market Place is the oldest public house in the area, dating back to the 14th century and as is to be expected, it has its fair share of spooky activity. The area around the toilets is said to have a chilling atmosphere and there have been reports of the toilet doors being jammed for no reason.
Brian Evans said: “There have been several reports of strange goings on in the Golden Lion. There have been sudden drops of temperature and sightings of eerie shapes.
‘People have spoken about a feeling of being watched. One woman who worked there refused to use the ladies toilets again after the door jammed shut once.”
He added: “Many people don’t like talking about ghost stories because they fear they won’t be believed. There are probably a lot more stories out there that we don’t know about.”
· If you have a Havering ghost story write to us at 3 Richer Chambers, High Street, Romford, RM1 1JD
