Two pubs in Saffron Walden are haunted; The Sun Inn has a Cromwellian and Civil War history attatched to it. It is no longer a public house, but the building remains and now houses other businesses. People have reported seeing a Cromwellian Soldier in the older parts of the building. Furniture moves by itself and many times people have thought that someone had broken into the building because of the noises. The Cross Keys, on the corner of High Street and King Street also has Civil War ties and it is said that every Christmas Eve a man is seen running down a dead end passageway in the pub and vanishes. *wonders if it was Santa having a sneaky pint* Hill House in the High Street is haunted by Nelly Ketteridge, a young maid who once worked at the house, but froze to death in a snowstorm on her way home from work on 6 January 1845. Her ghost causes sudden draughts in corridors but is always felt to be just a friendly little ghost letting you know she is there. Activity was so common that servants grew accustomed to her little games and used to say hello and goodbye to her each day!

Saffron Walden does have a lot of history, and is a lovely area.

There are theories that ghosts replay themselves on anniversaries. For example, my ex saw a man in his sisters house, walk from the lounge passed the stairs into the dining room. He was terrified as he thought someone had broken in, but when we investigated no one was there and there was no possible way he could have escaped from the house as we were in a first floor maisonette with the only two exits in the lounge and he had walked the opposite way. This was New Years Eve and when my ex sister in law returned from her party with a neighbour, it was revealed that the man who used to live there went out to get some champagne for him and his wife to toast the new year in and dropped dead in the dining room from a heart attack. My hubby had seen his ghost at 11.45pm, just about the time he had gone out one year previously to get the champagne!!!! That was a wierd night!

Well we done a vigil the following new year, but saw nothing She moved out after that and I don't know if anyone else has seen him. It's a really rough council estate in Pitsea and I don't fancy knocking on the door to ask incase I get told where to go and punched in the face lol

Hi,
Have any of you heard about the phantom ball of fire that rolls through a council estate in Saffron Walden...theres more to this tale than a natural event!
Make a post if you want me to tell you more

Hi Paul,
Strangely enough it appears on an old airfield.
At the top part of Saffron Walden there is an old disused WWII airfield that people used to claim to see a ball of fire rolling down the old runway. This area is now a housing estate as far as I know.
People that have got close enough to the ball of fire, either out of choice, luck or unluck however you wish to look at it have noticed that in fact the ball of fire is an RAF pilot on fire rolling down what was the old runway.
I have been told this by a Saffron Walden resident, I dont think the area is available to investigation but is worth note anyway
regards
Dave

Hi Paul,
Might be worth you taking a trip to the area to take a butchers at it and see if the area is a possible investigation site
If you do let me know how you get on
Dave
