I was told that the captain Cook public house in Barking is reportedly haunted, and that there is a tunnel underneath which leads straight to the st Margaret'schurch which is over the road.
According to legend Captain Cook, married at this church.
Does anyone have any info on this location.

There used to be an old abbey near this site. It was here that the location for Dagenham (Parish) Church was commissioned almost 1000 years ago. Of course in those days the church (in Dagenham) would have just been a small wooden shack. But going back to Captain Cook: according to the local council he was married at St Margaret’s in 1762. Here’s an article from the local councils website: The parish church of St. Margaret, Barking dates from the 13th century, or earlier. It was built within the Barking Abbey precincts and is said to have been a chapel until made into the parish church in about 1300. After the Dissolution and the death of William Pownsett of Loxford, last Steward of the Abbey, his executors purchased the rectory and advowson and gave them to All Souls College, Oxford, to provide exhibitions there for two poor scholars. The former vicarage, between Ripple Road and St. Awdrys Walk, was built in 1794. The church registers record the marriage at St. Margaret's, on 21st December, 1762, of Capt. James Cook the circumnavigator.

Gosh, this brought back memories. As a child living in Barking I used to play all the time in the Abbey ruins. And I used to live in St Awdrys Road and once had tea at the vicarage (can't remember why - many moons ago). I can remember, when I was about 14, getting into the Abbey grounds at night (very conveniently bent railing helped) and walking up to St Margarets church - no torch, pitch black and very eerie. I have not heard of the Abbey ruins or the churchyard being haunted but then again I never researched it out. It certainly might warrant checking as it is such a very old site.

i know somebody who used to manage the pub and she said that other members of staff were scared to go down the cellar coz there was noises and an uncomfortable feeling down there she says that the tunnel is seperated by locked doors but obviously she asked where the doors led to and they lead to the abbey opposite
