The Swan was originally called 'The Argent' then 'The Gun' before becoming 'The Swan in 1783. The Inn harbours the ghost of William Hunter who was executed in 1555 for his Protestant beliefs, aged 19.
William told the next day how he had dreamt of his execution day and all went as he said. He was tied to a stake and burned, although it is more likely he suffocated in the thick smoke.
In 1963, the daughter of the licensee saw a man in a hat follow her mother across the landing. Six years later, the daughter of another landlord left the pub for good after being terrified by the paranormal activity.
Copper plates have been hurled, unexplained bumps and bangs have been heard in the cellar and furniture has been moved in the night. Doors have been locked and unlocked and lights flick on and off. Objects have vanished, only to reappear in a completely different place and a telephone in a locked room had fell from the wall and flown across the room.
Sounds like a spooky place!!
