"Hornchurch Country Park’ (Essex) is apparently a good place to witness WW1 & 2 paranormal phenomena. Part of the Country Park was once an airfield. Many members of the public have claimed to have witnessed manifestations of wartime servicemen - including the faint sounds aircraft engines. Adjacent to the Country Park / old airfield is a geriatric Hospital. Many patients, Dr’s, nurses and other staff have reported seeing paranormal anomalies here. Here is an historical account for this site: History…<br> The park has a long history - the southern part was once within Dovers Manor and later became Albyns Farm . During the First World War an airfield was created at Suttons Farm from which the Royal Flying Corps defended London from attacks by Zeppelins. This led to the development of RAF Hornchurch - during World War 2 it was home to fighter aircraft, notably squadrons of Spitfires which played a prominent role in the Battle of Britain. Many of the airfield's remaining features can be seen along the Eastern Pathway, starting at the Squadron's Approach Car Park. Dispersal bays can be seen adjacent to the old perimeter track and a number of gun emplacements and pillboxes can be found - all part of the airfield's own defences. All the above historical text remains the copyright of: Town Hall. Main Road. Romford. RM1 3BB. www.havering.gov.uk

I was employed at St. Georges Hospital in Hornchurch at the start of the 1980's (oops! thats showing my age) I worked on Cranham ward. On many occassions during the night shifts I used to experience different patients reporting seeing men in uniform climbing in through the ward windows. Although I never actually saw this phenomenon for myself I can honestly say that there were definate atmospheric changes within the ward when the reported sightings were happening. But not just the hospital, the nurses home was also a great area for activity ( of the paranormal kind, ha ha!) We often experienced activity that could only be described as being that of a poltergeist, with items falling from surfaces during the day and night. Things went missing and loud bangs were often heard throughout the building. We also had episodes of light disturbances and on one occassion thought it was necessary to stage an on mass vigil. I agree that this area has lots to offer by way of paranormal activity.

Thanks Terri and welcome. That is very interesting and useful to know - it does sound like there was some activity there. As far as investigating Hornchurch goes - what dates can people do - Kurt do you know when the next full moon is? Paul and I are busy most weekends in June. I think the 5th is the highgate day out, 12th Edinburgh Vaults, 19th Alton Towers, 26th Hadleigh so may have to be july or a Friday night just for a mini invest and wander?

Hi, Sorry for my delay in getting back to you but I never noticed your question. There are 2 full-moons in July: the 2nd and the 31st - the rare BLUE MOON! Unfortunately I'm on Holiday around the first one but I'm free on the second one which is a Saturday. Remember that July's 2nd full moon is a BLUE MOON - this means that JULY should be, in theory, a very paranormal MONTH!

Well our preliminary investigation, last week, emphasised to us that there may well indeed be paranormal activity at Hornchurch Country Park.
We discovered a hot spot on an area where aircraft would have taken off from – for which could have been down to residual energy.
And we all felt the same feeling of sombre at another specific location.
This investigation, I feel, will be a success!

I live in Hornchurch and walk my dog everyday at this location. I have travelled virtually every path and I am familiar with most all of what remains from the war years. My father served at RAF Hornchurch and passed on many stories to me. I would recommend the BBC publication 'Two men in a trench' volume 2 as s it pinpoints the location of WW2 remains. The content of the book has been shown on BBC tv twice within the last year (I made a copy). I must admit that when walking alone along paths that my father trod all those years ago I wonder if we will meet again. The Good Intent pub ( on South End Road) has a strong connection with the airfield and the Officers Mess survives almost opposite as private housing. I wish you luck with your investigation but suggest you take care visiting the site at night as local lads sometimes use it as a motorcycle trials track (illegally), perhaps from a distance the sound of these powerful bikes could be likened to that of aircraft! Sadly the remaining Pill Boxes are also frequently used by local youths for pastimes which are to say the least, anti-social.

Hi Rekab I know the Good Intent well...I didn't realise it had such a stong history with the air field though. Paul I would love to come along if possible...I do love anything to do with military history.

Thanks Paul...it sounds interesting and loads of history involved.
Does anyone else agree..that when you see photos of those passed over like the one above...it makes things more real.

on a similar theme .... www.smartin67.freeserve.co.uk/1944.htm... this is all really local to me. There are old bunkers still able to be sat in in the fields at the top of my road. Im in communication with this guy but from what ive found on the site there are many crashes and instances of people being killed all around this area. As for ghosts i've not heard of any sightings or experiences so far, but the research goes on........

ill assist in the survey too if you are serious. There are also preserved bunkers at the top of my road, which you can still climb in. Because they are behind fenced off land not many people now of them so they are well preserved. I dont think they are air raid shelters - they have windows from which to fire weapons i think a medium at this place would be useful. Again i have heard of no ghost stories about these areas.

You could just start by asking if people believe in the paranormal...have they had any experiences...if yes where/when/what happened.

Several places on the site have already been suggested to be active, and, as an investigation was suggested for tonight a while back, why the talk of surveys? Forgive my naivety but the idea of actually investigating the location properly seems to have gone off the boil? rekrab.

As am i, we would love to go back but our next weekend with no invests is towards the end of august, (our only weekend off for a while) in between every weekend being taken up for travelling and the invests - we then have all the post investigation stuff to do, go through hundreds of photos, video footage, evps, writing the reports, it all takes a very long time and at the same time we are still building the new site and the shop. There just isn't enough time to do things straight away as they also need planning. There will definatly be a meet up and invest at hornchurch but at the moment we just cant fit it in, we may be able to come up one weeknight but we wont be able to do a full blown investigation as we will have so much post-invest stuff to sort out.
