Oh thats just the rail signal lights. There are no other lights down there at that time of night and the signals remain green until the early trains begin to run around 4-5am.
There is marshland between Canvey and Hadleigh and you do get Willo the Wisps/Jack O'Lantern's/Corpse Lights across the marshes. They are not paranormal though, just gasses from dead animals igniting on the surface.

I think I fear the living up there more than the dead I was up there at 8.45am on Friday morning. I had to park my car in Castle Lane before donning wellies to take the muddy trek up the mount lane to the castle ruin. There was a couple of dog walkers, but there was this one man who was sat in his car alone at the end of the lane. What on earth he was doing there at that time I don't know!!! (He probably thought the same about me lol!) It was fantastic up there! The sun was rising right behind the south east tower and it was FLIPPIN FREEZING!!!!!! I took my photo's and took off back to my car. It seemed like a good idea until I actually got there and realised I was all alone in a scary place LMAO

As you come up the path and you have that hill on your left as you go into the castle grounds from there about 5 of us saw a black figure standing below under a tree where the wall goes along downhill. It moved slightly from time to time but only by about a metre or so. At first we put it to a shadow or something, but a few times i even called down to 'it' to ask if the person or thing was ok. It seemed it was sussing us out and was just standing there watching us. I ran down the hill and crouched by the wall and i too heard voices, it seemed sweet, but also as tho it was been spoken backwards or something, i could no longer see the figure when i was around 8-10 metres from where it would have been but there was this very quiet sweet backward speaking voice. That scared me and after i ran the others i was with quickly ran too. But that was just one time, i have been up there on numerous occasions at night and they have always been of a relaxing atmosphere

That's a really interesting observation, especially as there were a number of people witnessing it at the same time ! Mandy

yea, ive done a bit of research on it, its apparently supposed to be a 'cunning' man named murell, (the ghostly shade i saw in hadleigh castle) which was pre-pickingill (cunning men are apparently witch doctors.) Numerous articles show links with murell and canewdon (which was later lead by pickingill. Since two of the recent sightings i saw ive seen lately were hadleigh castle and canewdon church im going a bit crazy trying to work out whats going on lol.

James Murrell's ghost is usually sighted further down the hill, towards the creek; this is where he used to gather herbs for his potions. Murrell and George Pickingill were not really connected in any way, other than the fact they were both 'Cunning Men'. Murrell is buried in an unmarked grave in St James' churchyard - he used to live in Endway where McDonalds is now ;D Be very aware that there are always fools mucking about up at the castle. The recent lot decided to make a crappy crop circle in nearby fields There are always some idiots getting drunk amongst the ruins or just basically playing tricks to mess with people's heads! However there are more than a few reports of a cloaked lady that calls out to people and acts in a drunken manner. She has been spotted many times over the last century.
