When my friend was about 10, her friends called for her to tell her they would be at the castle when she had finished her homework and to meet them there.
She set off on her bike to meet them and saw them cycling up Castle Lane toward her. As they got closer she realised they were all crying and they whizzed past her, not stopping.
One of them turned to look behind and stopped to tell her what happened. They were playing by the south east tower, when a HUGE black dog with red eyes approched them. He said it was rabid, foaming at the mouth and snarling at them. They all managed to get away, but were very upset.
The parents called the police and the RSPCA, but no dog was found.
In the years following all the children began to die from illnesses or accidents.
We were in the Bread and Cheese pub in Thundersley one afternoon when my friend pointed out a young man at the bar, he seemed sad and stared into his pint. That's when she told me this story; that man was the last one of the kids that saw the dog, all the rest had died over the 10 years since the incident.
This girl isn't a story teller and seemed very distressed while telling me the story, something she hadn't told anyone for years.

hey i just wanna add something about hadleigh here. Ive lived in and around essex/east london all my life and hadnt even heard of the castle or its history until i found some stuff on the web.
So late last week myself and my gf's 2 bro's cruised down to the castle, ariving at about 11pm.
We had 2 distinct experiences. The first was the sound of voices on the breeze, it was a warm clear night and every now and then we could all hear what sounded like women talking but not clear enough to understand what was been the said.
The second really freaked me out. They are doing archaeological digs there at the mo and i suggested we walk across to see them. As i walked over i heard the 2 brothers walking behind me and also sensed them, as you vcan when people are close by, it was only when i turned around that i saw they were about 5metres to my right and not where i had heard and sensed them to be as i approached the digs.
It was very odd and after that we all felt a little scared and hurridley left the sight.
A fantastic place to visit in my opinion would love to go ib the day sometime.

Hi there,
We definitely heard a womans or womens' voices but we were unable to hear what they were saying. It was fairly breezy and the voices only seemed to be audible when the wind picked up.
What they were saying is a mystery but they sounded warm and hapy to us. It was only when I got spooked by sensing someone behind me that the atmosphere became different and we left feeling as though we we were not so welcome.
I hope to hear of your experiences on the vigil.

What a great experience Geoff!
I can see Hadleigh Castle if I stand on the sea wall at the end of my road and I see it everyday when I drop my daughter off at school!
I have lost count of the amount of times I have been up there, but I will always remember the first time. I found it a VERY eerie and atmosperic place, but nice eerie. I still get that feeling every time I go up there.

Oh, the local herb man spotted around the Castle is James 'Cunning' Murrell. He lived in Endway (next to McDonalds ) and was a 'witch doctor'. He often announced himself as 'the devil's master', but his craft involved ridding people of hex's or spells, chasing away bad witches and curing people of illnesses. He predicted his death and was spookily correct! He is buried in an unmarked grave, along with his wife and kids, on the east side of St James the Less churchyard (Hadleigh Church). The character that made TV's Worzel Gummidge come to life, was based on James Murrell!

went out to hadliegh castle tonight about 2 in the morning to have a look round. Didnt realise how windy it was til we got there! Blew us over a couple of times - didn't realise it was a storm We had a look round the grounds and the tower and took a night vision digital camcorder, a normal vhs camcorder and an EMF. Nothing to report although we have to check the tapes. On the way back noticed something odd however, there was a bright green light shining on the flats between the base of the hill and the train tracks looking towards Canvey. We have it on tape but don't know what it was. It was too dangerous to go down there but it was there for ages. Does anyone know what this could be?

That green light is flourescent tube lighting fixed into the eves of the roof of a dental surgery. I can see the light from my house which is on the southern seafront side of Canvey Island.
You're brave going up there in that storm lol It's windy up there at the best of times, but it must have been freezing!

didnt explain that very well it was in the field at the bottom of the mount between the castle and the railway tracks looking towards kent... imagine standing by the tower at the base of the mound and looking towards canvey and its at the bottom of the hill... bit hard to explain really but i'm sure it wasnt a dentists.. it was like a round green light...
