Hi Cigz, Welcome to Essex Paranormal ! Hope you enjoy our site ! There always seems to be something going on at Canewdon, It's a very interesting place, had a few 'experiences' there myself. Have a look under the 'Paranormal Investigation Reports' board on the forum, there are some Team reports from Canewdon (along with the reports from other locations). Also see the 'Paranormal Investigation Photographs' section as it includes photos taken at Canewdon. Steve

I have visited Canewdon a few times (the last being this Sunday). It is an area that has great significance to pagans, and especially Heathens (including myself). It is a historic Saxon area with a lot of mystery.
I would suggest that anyone interested in this place picks up an excellent book called 'the Pickingill Papers'. It is about old George Pickingill, the most famous of the Canewdon Hereditary witches (or cunning men). It has some great insight from very knowledgable locals, including some who it is alleged are still heriditary initiates into the craft in the area.
the are some great tales of hauntings including a faceless lady in a grey veil that prays at the church alter, and the appirition of Peter de Westham, the Chaplain to King Henry II (13th century).
To be honest I have yet to visit the site at night, but would love too as there is a strong enough prescence during dsy light, so nigh time must be amazing.

It is an amazing place I have to admit. I have visited at night and had some very ineresting encounters to say the least. I have become familiar with two particular energy's that appear to be around on many occasions when I have been there. I must go there again and do some more.
I will look up that book, thank you for that information. It sounds very interesting!

Lewis - Core Team Member more info on that book: The Pickingill Papers: The origin of the Gardnerian craft: author W.E. Liddell ISBN 1-898307-10-5 with amazon link: www.amazon.co.uk/Pickingill-Papers-Origin-Gardnerian-Craft/dp/1898307105/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226490543&sr=8-1hope this helps. The book is aimed at wiccans, but for the price it has a wealth of local knowledge and history, especially about Canewdon. I hadn't been to Canewdon for some time, and was suprised to see that the Rectory has been totally renovated.

Coalhouse fort is not too far from me at all, but I hardly ever visit it for some reason. I can remember climbing all over it when i was a kid, before it was taken into care and renovated like it is today. enjoy Canewdon if you go. It was freezing up there on Sunday. very windy.
