Dowsing is commonly known as a method used to find water underground.
It is the ability to find hidden objects - not just water. You can use dowsing for example – to find your keys.
There is also an informative side of dowsing which is popular with paranormal investigators where the rods or pendulum provide a yes or no response.
The art of dowsing is said to be a natural ability in humans.
Dowsing rods seem to date back over 8,000 years. There is evidence of this in cave drawings that seem to show early man using the rods to find water.
It is accepted that the Egyptians used images of forked rods in some of their artwork as did the Ancient Chinese Kings.
In Europe, it was known for dowsing to be used in the Middle Ages to find coal. Since this time people have dowsed for everything from lost objects to missing people.
In around 1630, there was a famous case in Lyon where a dowser was called in by the police to help find a murderer .
Using his rods he walked through the streets, crossing a bridge over the Rhone River.
He was constantly guided by his rod's indications.
He was eventually led to a man who played a significant role in the murder.
The Christian Church at one time believed that dowsing was a form of witchcraft.
Thankfully that is no longer the case, and there have been many studies of dowsing since that time.
The use of dowsing to find underground water has been widely accepted as the results speak for themselves, as time and time again a dowser would correctly not only find the water, but tell how deep and how many litre's per second was flowing in the underground stream/river. Other resources that have been successfully found by dowsers include minerals, natural gases etc..
Dowsing is also used to detect ley lines, lines of magnetic energy that cover the earth, and many ancient sites in England, Wales and scotland are situated along these lines, ley lines are also suggested to be a part of the reason to why some locations are so active, it is thought these lines contain energy that spirits can use.
The other use which is used by a lot of groups during investigations is informative dowsing where the dowser can determine if a spirit entity is near by and communicate with them by way of yes and no answers that the rods indicate, these details can be historically checked at a later date (if possible).
How Does Dowsing Work?
No-one knows for sure how dowsing actually works- not even experienced dowsers.
Although there are many theories.
Some think there is a psychic connection made between the dowser and the spirit/water/object.
This suggests that all things living and inanimate, possess an energy force of some kind.
It is widely believed that the dowser, by concentrating on what he/she is trying to find, is somehow able to tune in to the energy force of the object/spirit which forces the dowsing rods or crystal pendulum to move.
Many sceptics of course, say that dowsing doesn't work at all.
They believe the dowsers are either lucky, have good instincts or already have trained knowledge.
As far as contacting spirits go, dowsers can simply be accused of making it up.
If the information gained does check out historically the dowser is likely to be accused of researching the history of the location and memorising the names of past occupants.
For believer or sceptic, there's no definitive proof either way and it really is a matter of opinion.
Here at Essex Paranormal we do believe that dowsing is an effective way to talk to spirit and regularly use dowsing rods on our investigations.
