I have just bought a sony digital dictaphone and wondered if this is the best way to get EVP's? I was looking EVP up on the internet and a couple of groups recommended the Sony Dictaphone set to low quality mode. I was wondering about the other methods: Casette tape (cause of the background noise), Minidisc (this is compressed isnt it? I cant see this is a reliable method if the sound has been compressed?) and franks box. There is also an EVP machine on ebay at the moment thats looks a bit cheap. Apparently it lets you hear EVP's as they happen???

I have just bought an Olympus 4100pc dictaphone which I used for the first time on investigation at The Ragged School. I am impressed with it, haven't picked up an evp yet but it really picked up everything that was going on very well when I used it.

I am impressed with mine too, are you using an external microphone to eliminate noise? I was looking at parabolic ones but they cost a fortune!

I used it without an external at the School and that gave good results I will be testing it soon with.

I think the built in one is fine - tested it out today! I went up to Rayleigh Mount for a walk today just before it closed and I was standing at the top recording on the dictaphone for about 10 minutes. Just checked it and there is a faint child's voice - it sounds like singing! Going to get a lead tomorrow so I can stick it on the net, will post a link if you guys are interested!

Minidisc (this is compressed isnt it? I cant see this is a reliable method if the sound has been compressed?) Just to clarify, the newer HiMD devices have an uncompressed mode. Having said that, I've had an older model (compressed) recording alongside a HiMD model that both recorded exactly the same EVP sample. Kind Regards Baruc.

Hi baruc
in my experience i would suggest the microphone is the key to capturing evp's, and i believe compressed types of media are good enough to analyse any audio caught, unless your an expert and know what your looking for in the waveform normal compressed digital recorders will work fine
cheers

If you're sure.
Kind Regards Baruc.

well your example of capturing an evp on both devices suggests that the compression is not a factor when capturing evps but more with the analysis afterwards, the purer the recording the better the waveform will be for analysis.
the reason i say the microphone is the key is due to the theory that a magnetic flux will induce a current in the coil or lead of the microphone, meaning an inaudioble signal will become audioble on the device as many people report, and after doing many proof of concept tests the quality of the recording is similar to that of known examples of evp
