[glow=red,2,300]High Beech (or Beach since below it are sand and gravel beds) Epping Forest…[/glow] High Beech is reputed to be the centre of Epping’s paranormal haunts. Ghosts from Turpin to Queen Boudicca have allegedly been seen here. Not say the least: poltergeistal activity is also reputed to be present, possibly from tormented souls whom have lost their lives amongst this ancient woodland. Hangman’s Hill is by far the most common area in which the public like to experience the paranormal for themselves. Many people claim that their cars mysterious travel up this hilly area when their engines are turned off and the gears are in neural. Whether or not this is just an optical illusion is only a matter of investigation! Scene of Queen Boudicca's last stand. View over High Beech. A secluded path through the forest.

As a local to the area (I grew up in Waltham Abbey, now live near Epping) I concur with most of the previous post. The hangman's hill experience is an optical illusion(great fun tho) I know of several horse riders(including skeptical members of my family) who have seen the outline of a man wearing a tricorn hat and cape astride a large black horse whilst riding in different parts of the High Beech area to this day. The legend of Turpin is historically associated with the Loughton Camp area of the forest, which is just outside of High Beech on the outskirts of Loughton, I have been there several times now. The Wake Arms roundabout (between High Beech and Epping) used to be a notorious accident blackspot, there is also legend of a horse-drawn mailcoach that periodically passes through heading towards Epping at the midnight hour. A headless biker clad in leathers also reputedly manifests in this area. Copped Hall Manor is a manor house situated near Epping that has been raised to the ground on two occasions, the first killing female occupants who reputedly still walk in the area. A very interesting area to live in

I've been to hang man's hill too (hasn't everyone!) It was about 2 in the morning and got to say it crapped the life out of me. It's when you hear the car groaning and then start rolling. We went back in the daylight and put a bottle at the top and it rolled down (opposite way the cars roll) so not sure if it is an optical illusion mind you I suppose it's because I don't want it to be!!

i think many people would be interested in investigating this location, i certainly would, but its a massive area so work needs to be done to narrow it down to a known area where paranormal activity akes place

Hi!
An investigation at High Beech sounds like a great idea! We could start off outside the church there perhaps, it could be a good place to meet? It's a well known place for bikers to meet at the weekend (they're a scary looking lot wrapped up in their leathers and streetfighter bikes, but what a nice lot), so that's probably where ye old headless biker's come from. Like you say, it's so easy to get lost in Epping Forest so it would need to be narrowed down as you say. I live in North Weald so if I can help gather info for this possible investigation, just let me know! I could pinch my husband's biking leathers for effect...

Hi, this is my first proper post on the site, and i'd like to tell you about a spooky but not paranormal incident that occured recently in High Beach.
On Halloween this year, Me, My Brother, our girlfriends and a few mates decided we'd go for a drive in High Beach just to get a bit "spooked"
After showing one of mates "hang man hill" we decided to park up and go for a walk into the forrest area that is infront of the main carparks.
The time was arround 11pm and there was quite a few people letting off fireworks there at this time.
As we walked down the grassy hill towards the wooded area a small group of people walked by heading back towards the carpark. We spotted lights down near the trees which we at first though was a Car's headlights so decided to keep on goin. Getting nearer to them it become clear that it was not a car but actually candles, lots of them. I thought it could have been people doing some rituals, but decided to go and investigate anyway.
Getting nearer still we discoverd that no one was there, and the candles where all placed infront of a large oak tree, with somthing resting up against the trunk.
In the pitch black with the candles casting weird shadows from the angle we approached the tree we originally thought this was a small animal like a cat, that had been impaled into the trunk. Thankfully upon closer inspection it turned out to be a beautiful white rose, with a photo of a young man and woman stuck to the tree.
There was nothing else out of place around, except a baseball cap that had been placed on a wooden stake a few yards away (which actually cast a spooky silloette)
The photo, rose and candles did make us all feel a little uneasy being in the forest now so we decided to move on for a bit further before returning back to the car.
I was wondering if anyone knows of anything regarding who the people in the photo could have been? they were early 20's and the photo was a computer print out.
Has anyone been murdered or killed in the Forest itself? and is it tradition to set up these vigils on Halloween? as someone told me its "the day the dead get a chance to come back"

Hi
I think that quite a few people have been murdered in Epping forest over the years.
You could have stumbled across some sort of ritual.

Hi All
Where do you start with 6,000 acres of ancient Epping Forest though today 2,430 hectares actually remain.
Such an encahanted place and cloaked in mystery. As a child it fascinated me though as an adult it intreguies me.
In the Domesday Book Epping is referred to as the Manor of Eppinga, conferred upon the monks and abbots of Waltham Abbey by King Harold. There have been a number of Palaeolithic finds & Mesolithic within the forest. The earlier main occupation of the Forest, however, seems to have been during the Iron Age with the two Iron Age camps on the Forest ridge: Ambresbury Banks and Loughton Camp.
During the Roman Period, the main road from London to Dunmow passed between Epping and Hainault Forests, with at least one important settlement at Woolston in Chigwell (Large villa discovered). Other settlements have also been found at Wanstead, Leyton, and possibly Theydon Bois (Rackham, 1978).
Dick turpin as seen on MHL ! Hangmans Hill - As mentioned in previous posts I agree Freaky or what...!
High Beach (beech) Church is an eerie place. By day a truly scenic place but by night it is chilling.
The Church of the Holy Innocents was built in 1873 to replace the one in Church Road, St. Paul's which had been built in 1836 but had become dilapidated. The church was built in the English Gothic style. It was named the Church of the Holy Innocents because the Baring family had children who had died in infancy and so the church was named in memory of them Tennyson, the poet, lived in High Beach at Beech Hill Park between 1837 and 1840 and it was in this churchyard where he wrote part of the poem "In Memoriam".
Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge was originally called the Great Standing. It was built for King Henry VIII in 1543 and was used as a grandstand to watch the hunting of deer or possibly from which to shoot deer, with crossbows.
Connaught Water. The lake covers about 10 acresThis lake was named after the Duke of Connaught, who was the first Ranger of the forest
Loughton Camp Iron-age Hill Fort. Iron-age hill forts in Epping Forest are thought to date from about 500 BC
Murders :- Susan Blatchford, 11, and her 12-year-old friend Gary Hanlon vanished from their homes in north London in March 1970. Their bodies were found months later in a copse and the newspapers at the time called them the "Babes in the wood".
I can also recall a some sort of fighter/bomber plane being discovered in the forest. Also heard various tales of bodies being dumped in Epping Forest from the krays era
Definately a place to visit !

This church is very spooky at night, when you drive past it in the dark you just a creepy feeling inside you.
I still haven't had the guts to walk around it at night and do some filming. But I will do one day. I always like the way you get shadows around the graveyard and you just wonder if your minds playing tricks or theres really somthing there.
Anyone here ever done a invest at the church?
Or anyone got any stories regarding it or the forrest in general.

[/img] Scene of Queen Boudicca's last stand.
I just noticed what appears to be an orb in this picture. Anyone see it? And more importantly, anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be? Apologies if this was mentioned before.
