Hi Laura, enjoying the site by the way.

My view of Ouija boards is formed by my use of them in the 1980's when I was a young teenager. I had always been interested by the 'occult' and anything esoteric at this point and had a ton of books from a great old bookshop called Atticus that used to be in Grays (it had an excellent antiquarian paranormal section, and I used to spend any spare paper round money on books there!).

I made a couple of Ouija boards myself in my Dad's shed at the time and used them both alone and with a group of trusted friends.

I used to have regular contact with a boy named 'Gorg' (his spelling on the board) who said that he had died during the 'plague'. The thing that always confused me was that he described himself as 'Saxon' which historically would appear out of context. I have to say that it used to be an unerving yet relaxing experience for me, and certainly when you use a Ouija board alone you KNOW that there is no one else physically moving the glass other than you, your subconcious, or a spirit.

I also had a really interesting experience at home with a group of about 6 friends when I was 15. We were using 2 boards in two rooms (the dining room and the kitchen) and tried to communicate with each other only through the board and spirits. One of my close friends had lost his dog to an accident in his dad's Koi carp pond. We seemed to get the spirit of the 'dog' on both boards at the same time. Now my friend Damian was using the same board as me, and another of my friends, Stuart, was using the board in the kitchen.

The two friends knew each other from school but didnt socialise with each other, only as a group when we were at school. Stuart wrote a message down that he was given by the board, and then read it out to us in the other room. It contained the name of Damian's dog, the way that it died (falling in the pond when it ws frozen, and not being able to get from under the ice), it also spelled out the first word of the name of the street where it lived.

this experience really freaked us out, and the majority of my friends would never use a board again. I continued to for a while until one experience when I was at home alone after a communication with a spirit whose name I cannot recall. I later found a stack of copper coins piled precariously in my cupboard (it was about 12 inches tall, and with a very light touch it fell over). This is totally unexplained to me and freaked me out. I haven't used a Ouija board since.

Good question Laura!

I would love to use one, as far as I remember I have never had a chance but in the back in my mind I seem to think I may have when I was at boarding school but hey thats a long time ago.

How safe are they, and can they be affective if used alone or do they need a group to work?

I would love to give it a go but so long as I could use it safely without any affects on my family, is that possible?

Is it possible to make them?

I dont see any problems with them when used correctly and responsibly.
If we meet you on any future events where they are allowed i shall bring one along and we can show you how its done.
I wouldn't recommend using one if you are not confident in what you are doing or on your own, we always use them in a group under controlled conditions (as are all our experiments and vigils).
There is a local location in the pipeline for investigations where this can be done and i shall keep you updated on that when i have something arranged.
